Meet our July Alumni Spotlight: Meranda Nunez, MA

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Meranda Nunez, a Medical Assistant who graduated from Bolivar Technical College in 2016. Meranda has made remarkable progress in her career since then, working in a dual role position that encompasses both front office responsibilities and Medical Assisting duties. Let’s dive into our interview!

Q: How has your career in the medical field progressed since you graduated? What positions have you held and what are your current responsibilities?

Meranda: I am working in a dual role position. I work both front office and as a medical assistant. Working front office, I triage phone calls as they come in, send in medications, and take questions patients call in with. This helps cut back on messages sent to the nurses. I also help with rooming [patients], labs, and [giving] injections as well as covering for the nurses when they need time off.

Q: What influenced your decision to pursue a career in medical field?

Meranda: Opportunities for career growth. In the medical field, the opportunities never end. You can always further your education and work in different departments such as Radiology, Lab, Long Term Care, Clinic, Hospital, Home Health, and any of the specialties.

Q: How is working as a medical assistant different from what, as a student, you expected it to be?

Meranda: As a student, I wasn’t aware of how much medical assistants are utilized. Now, after working, I see that medical assistants are in high demand.

Q: What advice would you give to current students who are about to embark on their career path in the medical field? Are there any key lessons or insights that you wish you had known when you were starting out?

Meranda: Don’t be afraid to further your education. As you work in the medical field, you will find things that interest you. If that is something you want to pursue as a career, take the steps, find the program that works for you, and go for it!

Q: What is your favorite way to spend free time when you are not working as a medical assistant?  Any special ways to de-stress? Fun hobbies to help unwind?

Meranda: I spend most of my free time with my 2 little girls. We have a farm and they love to ride around on the side-by-side looking at and taking care of the animals.
