The Gray Matter Initiative: Get a Head Start in High School
Posted on January 15, 2026
Bolivar Technical College is opening the door earlier for students who know healthcare is where they want to be!
Beginning January 2026, BTC is launching the Gray Matter Initiative, a new dual enrollment pathway designed for high school juniors and seniors interested in nursing. The program allows students to complete Anatomy & Physiology I and II while still in high school, with 100% of tuition, fees, and required materials covered through a BTC scholarship.

A smarter start for future nurses
Anatomy & Physiology courses are foundational for any nursing program and often one of the biggest hurdles for new students. By completing these courses early, students can step into college-level nursing education with confidence and momentum.
Key benefits of the Gray Matter Initiative include:
• College credit earned at no cost to students or families
• Courses that count for both high school and BTC college credit
• A head start on prerequisite requirements for BTC’s Professional Nursing program
• A hybrid format designed to work alongside high school schedules
Built with students and families in mind
“This gives students a real head start,” said Erin Mock, MSN, RN, CNE, Director of Nursing Education at Bolivar Technical College. “They can complete these science courses while still in high school, without putting that cost on their families.”
BTC is partnering with public, private, and homeschool programs across the region to expand access to early college opportunities for students who are motivated and ready to begin building their future in healthcare.
What happens after high school
Students who successfully complete both Anatomy & Physiology courses will meet all prerequisite requirements for entry into BTC’s Professional Nursing program. That means less time waiting, less financial strain, and a smoother transition into nursing education after graduation.
The Gray Matter Initiative will begin in January 2026, with cohorts currently forming. High schools interested in participating or learning more are encouraged to contact BTC to discuss eligibility, scheduling, and student information sessions.
